Lake Tahoe Increasingly Relies on Ski Resorts for Local Economy

Winter recreation important to Lake Tahoe area

While Lake Tahoe is still known for its summer activities, the area is increasingly relying on ski resorts for the local economy. This is because a number of factors are changing the dynamic of Lake Tahoe, reports the Silicon Valley Mercury News:

A lousy economy and the enduring siphon of California's Indian casinos have made the area's tourism engine that much more reliant on heavenly, white fuel.

And it shows. Even with ski resort real estate hard hit by the recession, Lake Tahoe is turning toward ski resort tourism. The Ritz Carlton just opened a new hotel in Lake Tahoe, and many people increasingly rely on the jobs offered by ski resort tourism.

As the economy picks up, there are hopes that the Lake Tahoe economy will as well.
