| December 07, 2009 | | The Winter Olympics can spark ski resort real estate development | One of the interesting things about Whistler ski resort is that it was basically developed to be attractive for the Winter Olympics. And for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler is going to see a great deal of publicity -- and maybe even further development. The Winter Olympics have a long history of sparking ski resort real estate development.
One of the places that saw a ski boom after the Winter Olympics was Utah after the 2002 games. But before that, Squaw Valley in the Lake Tahoe area saw a ski resort development boom after the Olympics. And in 2010 there is a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of when the games were held in Squaw Valley. USA Today reports on the events Squaw Valley has lined up:
From Jan. 8-17, the resort will host 20 events commemorating the
Olympics. They include an Olympic Torch Relay, opening ceremony and an
1960 Olympian reception. The events are either free or to raise money
for a new Lake Tahoe ski heritage museum.
Structures from those Winter Olympics are still standing, along with newer structures that are the result of ski resort development since that time. It's a good reminder of the power that the Winter Olympics can have, even after the games are over.
