| December 02, 2009 | | Telluride and Wolf Creek score "B"s on environmental report card | Every year, the Ski Area Citizens' Coalition rates ski resorts on their environmental practices. The idea is to raise awareness of sustainable practices and encourage ski resorts to behave in a way that is more responsible toward the environment. In Colorado, Telluride and Wolf Creek both score "B's" according to the Durango Herald News.
However, even with these relatively good scores, the ski resorts were chided for some of their plans. Telluride is looking to expand, as is Wolf Creek. These expansions and ski resort real estate development could negatively impact the environment.
This year, for the first time, the Coalition issued a list of small ski areas that can't be graded, but still focus on environmental sustainability over aggressive ski resort real estate development. Among these "Little Ski Areas that Rock" are Silverton Mountain and Hesperus Ski Area.
