Will Lynx Habitat Limit Breckenridge Ski Resort Development?

Breckenridge may have to scale back ski trail plans
Breckenridge ski resort is becoming one of the more popular ski destinations in Colorado. The Summit County ski resort area is unassuming -- and cheaper than its glitzy counterparts Vail and Aspen -- and is considered a secret.

But the secret is getting out, and Breckenridge has some ski resort development plans to add more trails and terrain in habitat that opponents say should be for the lynx. CBS 4 Denver reports on the response by Breckenridge ski resort:

The resort is testing some wildlife management systems and has indicated it would be willing to negotiate with the Forest Service, Petitt said. Resort officials said they're not aware of any lynx activity in the area, but believe there is land across the mountain that could support the cats.

Challenges have been made by conservationists, and it remains to be seen what the environmental impact assessment and wildlife management plans will ultimately show -- and how Breckenridge plans for ski resort development could be affected.
