| January 16, 2009 | | Park City's premier event struggles, thanks to economy | In past years, the Sundance Film Festival has made a name for itself as THE premier independent film festival in the U.S., in spite of its out-of-the way location in the ski resort town of Park City, UT.
However, as the reputation of Sundance improved, the image changed, and the festival became a star-studded event that had less and less to do with Indie film. Now, reports, The Guardian, Sundance may return to its roots:
The economic climate may, in the end, see Sundance making a return to
its roots as a launchpad for the best in independent film-making,
rather than a freebie-filled Hollywood knees-up in a ski resort.
Attendance down at Sundance, due to the economy
The economic downturn is affecting a number of ski resort activities in Park City, UT, and Sundance is the biggest of these. Attendance is down as fewer people are willing travel and spend money. And studios aren't planning on buying films at the same rate -- or for the same prices -- as have been seen in the past.
