Ski Community Profile: Crested Butte

Colorado's Crested Butte ski resort is truly a community
Crested Butte ski resort
One of the most attractive things about the Crested Butte ski resort is that the town at the base of the mountain is a "real" town -- and a "real" community. People live at Crested Butte year round, and have jobs and roles in the community.

Because Crested Butte, like so many mountain ski resorts in the West, was once a mining town, it has deep roots in community living. However, during the bust times, people did not abandon Crested Butte and move elsewhere, leaving a ghost town for ski resort development later. Rather, Crested Butte has survived as a bona fide town for all these years, and its full time residents do their best to create a welcoming community for visitors.

Activities available at Crested Butte

Crested Butte has a variety of activities available. During the winter, there is skiing and snowboarding, of course. During the summer, it is possible to enjoy the mountain adventures of hiking, fishing and biking. Crested Butte also boasts shopping, dining, art galleries and nightlife.

Children can also enjoy the community atmosphere at Crested Butte ski resort. There are skiing and non-skiing programs for children, as well as a camp that features a Kids Night Out.
