| August 13, 2008 | | Downtown Steamboat Springs will go through an extensive re-development process over the next several years | The plans for the re-development of downtown Steamboat Springs has been called a blend of mountain style and urban style. The idea is to follow the mixed-use trend that is sweeping the nation -- creating real estate with a more urban feel -- while still maintaining the character of the mountain town.
In Steamboat Springs, the idea is to revitalize downtown with condos occupying the upper spaces of buildings that have restaurants, shops and boutiques on the lower levels. The idea has worked well in fellow ski community Aspen, and developers are working hard to ensure that Steamboat Springs retains its down home feel.
But the condos being put in come with a price that is anything but "down home": $650,000 to $2 million. But the makeover is expected to draw more tourists to this ski town, and bring more people in general to downtown.
